A free certificate is requested automatically once the domain points at your hosting. Browsers then show the lock.
It can take a few minutes after DNS is correct. A temporary certificate may show until the free one is issued.
If the lock is missing #
- Open your hosting panel
- Open Websites
- Select the site
- Open Advanced, then Security
- Scroll to SSL certificates
- Open the three-dot menu on the domain’s row
- Select Request Let’s Encrypt certificate
Once the lock shows, you can turn on Force HTTPS for the domain in the same table.
If the request fails #
- The domain’s A record (and www) must point at this hosting
- Wait for DNS to finish updating, then request again
- Pause a proxy or extra CDN in front of the site until the certificate issues
If you installed your own certificate, the free one is not requested until shortly before yours expires.
To install a certificate you bought elsewhere, use Install custom SSL in the same SSL certificates section. Most sites do not need that. See SSL certificates explained.
