Add or change a DNS record

DNS records tell the internet where your site and mail live. You may need to add one to verify your domain with another service, point a subdomain somewhere, or set up mail. If your domain’s DNS is with us, you do this in your control panel.

Before you start #

  • Open your control panel. See How to open your control panel.
  • Have the record you need: its type, its host name and its value. The service that asked for it will tell you.
  • Take care with the records for your domain, for www and for mail. Changing or deleting them can take your site or mail offline.

Find your DNS records #

  1. Open Websites and select your site.
  2. Open Domains, then the three-dot menu next to the domain, then Manage.
  3. Open DNS records. The table shows TYPE, HOST, VALUE and TTL for each record.

If the domain’s Manage page shows “Your domain’s DNS is hosted externally.”, your DNS is at your registrar or another DNS host. Add or change the record there instead. See Point your domain at Get Simple.

Add a record #

  1. Under DNS records, select Add record.
  2. Pick the Type, for example A, CNAME, MX or TXT.
  3. Fill in the fields for that type:
    • A: Hostname and IPv4 address
    • CNAME: Hostname and Is an alias of
    • MX: Hostname, Priority and Target domain
    • TXT: Hostname and Value
  4. Records on your main domain itself show as @ in the list. Not sure what to enter in Hostname for your main domain? Open a ticket from Get Help.
  5. Leave Use zone default (21600s) turned on for TTL.
  6. Select Create. Create stays dimmed until the required fields are filled.

Change or delete a record #

  1. Under DNS records, find the record. Open the three-dot menu at the far right of its row.
  2. To change it, select Edit. In Edit record, make your change and select Save. Save stays dimmed until you change something.
  3. To delete it, select Delete. In Delete DNS record, you’ll see the warning “This may cause disruption to your email and websites.” Select Delete to confirm, or Cancel to keep the record.

How long changes take #

DNS changes can take from a few minutes up to 24 to 48 hours. If the service you’re setting up says it can’t find the record, wait and check again.
